The Whole House Reuse (WHR) project is organized by Rekindle, a New Zealand building waste reuse initiative established after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Project organizers gained access to one earthquake-damaged home that was slated for demolition, and collaborated with contractors to take the building apart piece by piece. They then catalogued the materials saved from landfill, and made this available for the public to propose use of the materials for the creation of new objects, structures, and artworks that will be brought together for exhibition at Canterbury Museum, and off-site, in 2015.
Antioch College students and faculty initiated and begun collaboration with School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) students and faculty, presenting their initial research and concepts at a workshop in Chicago on October 26th. The groups continued to work together planning and designing online, and in a second workshop hosted by Antioch in December. In January 2015 a team of representatives from both Antioch and SAIC traveled to Christchurch and worked with New Zealand students to realize the artworks. Three projects emerged from this collaboration for display at the Canterbury Museum. All materials from these projects will leave the museum and be auctioned or given away.
