Object Recovery, 2011
In conjunction with the Without You I’m Nothing: Interactions
Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL
Performances daily, 12pm-5pm from April 19 – 24
This performance-based project addresses ideas of loss, repair, or renewal through the conceptual transformation of a broken object. Working together with visitors who bring broken objects to the museum, Black and the visitor consult to diagnose the object’s condition and together make the appropriate “repairs.” At first glance, the responses to brokenness are either a return to an object’s approximate state or a surrender to its broken obsolescence. However, through Black’s philosophical, sculptural, and performative interaction, she considers the potential transcendence of an object’s functional qualities by investigating the complex relationship between humans and things.
